This year was the 30th annual winternats. We got to the track early Sunday mourning and it was very cold for Florida.
Practice went good on Sunday, both of my cars were handling good for the first time out. Monday mourning was not as cold, but I was still freezing. Monday the track had a bit more traction than the day before. They also split up the sedan cars and the 1/8 scale, which was a good thing when I was running the sedan car. Later on in the day they did a mock qualifier, which was good because it let you know who was in your qualifier, it also let you but in some fast laps without having to worry about a lot of traffic.
Qualifying went well in sedan, Paolo and I were the only cars to do 23 laps. And by the end of qualifying Paolo was first and I was right behind him in second place. There ended up being 5 Serpent’s to make it straight into the A main.
In the 1/8 scale qualifying was a little bit harder. There was a lot more competition in 1/8 scale than there has been in the past couple of years. One of the toughest things was to make 5 minutes without refueling. Only the Mega engines were able to make run time, which played in our favor. So I ended up qualifying 4th in 1/8 scale, and was Serpent 2,3,4,5.
The sedan started off well Paolo was in first and I was in second, and we were pulling away from the rest of the field. About half way through the race Paolo was still in the lead and I was about a quarter of a lap behind him in second place. The rest of the field was a couple laps down from us. About 15 to 10 minutes left in the race my brakes started to fade, I thought it was kind of weird since my brakes don’t usually fade in the main. About a minute later the announcer said that my transponder was not counting anymore. That same lap I realized that the steering was slow and so was the acceleration. So I came in and changed the battery, got back on the track in fourth place, than I passed Gerdard for third, and that is where I finished.
In the 1/8 scale main I was doing good running in third palace until I ran out of fuel at about the 15 minute mark. When I got back on the track I was in seventh place as I started to make my way back up the field I hit the wall in the S turn, and it knocked the steering lever off the steering servo. So I ended up seventh in the 1/8 scale.
I would like to thank all of my sponsors: Serpent MRC, Serpent USA, Maxy’s Fuel, JACO tires, Futaba, and R&R tuning. Also big thanks to Roniel, Paolo, Gianni, Doug, and my dad.
