Round 1 or the UK National Championships

The 2006 season started at the magnificent Mendip circuit near Weston-Super-Mere. The track and site looked in good condition thanks to the hard working members.

The entry was very good with 63 drivers booked in to race, most of them were there practicing on Saturday. The track was damp in the morning but dried out by 11.00, unfortunately the rains came in the afternoon and most drivers spent the rest of the day talking about set-ups. Help was on hand from the Elite RC Racing Team for all Serpent drivers. No more practice took place on Saturday.

Sunday (Race Day). The weather was much kinder and we had 2 practice sessions. Most of the cars were using dry tyres. Back to proper racing!!

This was the first round of the 1/8th Serpent Series, 19 drivers had registered before the event. Everything was in place for a good days racing.

The paddock area was very busy a notable person that was missing this was the current British Champion Mark Green. Mark was racing with the Serpent Factory team at the EFRA GP in France (He was currently 4th overall after qualifying).

After round one Dave Dixon was on provisional TQ closely followed by Tim Wood and Richard Hicklin. Top Serpent Series driver was a very inform John Carr with his new 960.

Unfortunately the rain came after Heat 4 of Round 2 and nobody improved their
times fin the rest of qualifying.

After a delay the final listing was published and only 30 driver’s stayed to take part.

The 15 minute C Final was run in the rain, with Chris Edwards taking top honours, Daniel Bancroft second and Martin Thurston in third place.

The rain had stopped for the 20 minute B Final the track still had water on it and wet tyres were still working the best Paul Dewsnap was the winner with Mark Wakelin taking second place and Dave Jones coming in third place.

The track for the Main 30 minute A Final was still damp and very slippery, frantic tyre testing was going on during the 5 minute warm up for the final with most drivers going for ‘Damp tyres’. The racing was very close with the lead changing five times, Tim Wood started on Pole Position due to Dave Dixon having radio problems in the warm up, Richard Hicklin took the lead from Tim then John Carr having a brilliant day passed both of them and kept the lead for most of the race. John unfortunately suffered a servo failure at 25 minutes letting Pete Hasting take the win, Richard Hicklin was second and Tim Wood third.

The top honours in the Serpent Series goes to John Carr with Chris Simmons second.

See you all at the next race meeting 16th April at Halifax.
The next round of the Serpent Series will be at Wombwell 7 May.
