The newly introduced Belgian 235mm Serpent Series got underway over the weekend and it was Bart Van Echelpoel from Wijnegem who took victory.
Unfortunately the weather at the Houthalen track, venue for the opening race of the five round Series, was less than ideal and drivers were forced to sit out much of Saturday's practice due to the wet conditions.
Improving slightly for Sunday qualifying it was Mr. 235mm Willy Wuyts who secured pole position from Van Echelpoel and Luc Steylaerts self developed Serpent '845'.
Based on the 710 and featuring parts from the 960 and 835 the new creation showed great potential in the final as Luc took the early lead. Looking like making a dream debut, the '845' was to suffer a bearing failure allowing the 835 of Van Echelpoel past to take the lead. A lead he would hold till the flag. Completing the podium was rookie Sébastuin Quintin from Hove with his Nova Mega powered 835.
Although conditions where difficult at the track known for not being forgiving to mistakes, all competitors enjoyed a good opening event and are already looking forward to Round 2 of the Series which takes place at Leudelange in Luxembourg on May 20/21.
Organisers are expecting a number of new faces to join the action next time and are praying that sunshine greets them.
