TRATNIK AND FARIELLO TAKE SLOVENIAN SERIES WINS (18/07/2006)

Sunshine and very high temperatures greeted competitors from the Slovenian Serpent Series when it travelled to Cervignano track in Italy recently for its second round.  The 23 drivers had to deal with 35°C heat on a track that is very challenging and technical.

In the 1/8th Series pole position was secured by last year's Junior Series champion Nejc Mihelič (960/JP) with Series newcomer Izidor Tratnik (950R/MAX) lining up alongside him on the front row.  Mihelič took the initial lead but just before the 5min mark he had his first engine flame-out. Struck by more flame-outs he had to push really hard to make up for lost time resulting in a crash that broke a rear lower arm. With the damage repaired, the promising youngster charged back to finish 4th. The race was won by Tratnik who drove a steady error free race.  He was following home by Luka Sajovic who had been leading until a backmarker hit his car causing him to loose a front driveshaft. Completing the podium in 3rd spot was Nejc Obid (950R/NovaMega).

Vladimir Knehtl (710/RB) secured pole in the 1/10th Serpent Series final despite many engine problems. In the final he started well and opened up a comfortable lead. Unfortunately half way through the race he lost both 1st and 2nd gear and had to make a lengthy pit stop for repairs. This handed the lead to Salvatore Fariello who went on to take the win but a strong recovery drive by Knehtl saw him finish an excellent 2nd.  Orazio Tomaselli completed the podium.  Boštjan Rener (705/NovaMega), winner of the opening round of the Series, was unable to repeat his success when radio problems forced him to sit out the final.

A race for 1/8th Rally was also held at the event with Miha Mlekuž taking victory.

Another successful Serpent Series event, Top Modeltehnik (Serpent's Slovenian distributor) would like to thank Teamfriuli Model Club for giving them the opportunity to race at Cervignano.  A big thanks also to all the staff for making the event happen.

The final round of the Slovenian Serpent Series takes place at Tomlin on September 17th.
