Markus Mobers was in action in the 3rd qualifier event for German 1:10 200mm Nationals at Megadrom recently where the Serpent driver TQ'd his 720 for the second event in a row. A member of Team Serpent Germany, Mobers sent us this report from the event -
After a good start to my 200mm gas season in Düren we went on to the Megadrom Geilenkirchen for the 3rd qualifier on 9th and 10th of June.
Megadrom is a very tight but challenging track with lots of corners. After a few tanks my car felt a little understeered whilst turning in, so I changed from 80.000 weight oil at my front diff to 60.000. This improved laptimes quite a lot and compared to others in practice my laptimes were way faster.
I decided to run in my brand new Mega ZX DSII+ engine and after a couple of runs we fine tuned it. This motor felt brilliant, never had so much torque!!
Later on in practice it started to rain hard, so we had to wait for Sunday, the race day. Luckily the weather on Sunday morning was fine. We had four qualifiers coming up. In my first qualifier I took easy to have a good result. To my surprise I still could manage to take TQ spot by 5 seconds. Especially the car was very fast in the corners compared to others, simply Serpent style.
The last three qualifiers went even better, so I took TQ 6 seconds ahead of Rene Püpke. Third was Dominik Reschke and fourth track owner Kallinowski, both 2 more seconds behind Püpke.
In my direct practice I tried some little things with tyres and all seemed to be fine for the final.
At the start of the final I took the lead and could cruise away easily. As I wanted to extend the lead, I pushed a little harder and the car traction rolled. Hmmm, maybe 10mm ride height was to much on the rear…
I still could hold the lead and the first pit stop was on schedule. Well, however, the engine stalled when I left the pits. I lost more than a lap and came back as 7th on the track.
I started to push really hard and after 20 minutes I was 4th again and the three leaders not too far away. After the last pit stop I was right on the tail of the leading cars. I first passed Prümper and had Püpke in front of me. He was running nice and tidy lines, so it was not easy to find a way to get thru. With two more laps to go I decide to make a move on the outside in the infield and this worked. Well, I finished 2nd then, as there was not enough time left to catch up to the winner Kallinowski.
In summary I was very happy with my car and motor, all worked great. Simply bad luck at the first pit stop. I like to thank Serpent for their support and a great car and motor. Also thanks to my pitcrew, dad and the Spieß family!
Until next time and happy racing!
Markus
