Heremans wins Belgian 235mm opener (20/04/2008)

The Belgian 235mm National Championships got underway recently and it was once again Serpent that came out on top of the class despite some interesting new prototype cars joining the mix and some rather difficult race conditions.
Racing on the small and technical Houthalen circuit, drivers spent Saturday testing on a dry track only to arrive on race day to find a wet one. The rain stopped much to the delight of the drivers and was completely dry for start of the final but it was not to stay that way.
On the very first lap it started to rain lightly and everyone pitted to change tyres, then five minutes later the heavens opened up and another tyre stop was required as the track started to look like a swimming pool rather than a race circuit.
With the cars running around more like submarines, and drivers struggling to keep their engines running it was Leo Heremans, who took the win after 30 minutes of racing being the only driver to complete the full race distance. Willy Wuyts took second despite being unable to get his engine restarted in the dying miniutes of the race with Luc Steylaerts claiming third for an all Serpent 835 podium.
A difficult start to the 235mm championship, drivers are drying off in preparation for Round 2 when hopefully they will be more lucky with the weather.
