German 8th scale nationals in Hildesheim

We started our trip to Hildesheim on Tuesday, since the track was to be open for practice on Wednesday morning.
There was lots to do since I had just received my Max Power engines and had to break them in before the race would start.

Unfortunately, the weather forecast for the entire week looked anything but promising, which should turn out to be very precise for once..

In between rain showers we managed to get the engines broken in and together with my dad we managed to get a good set up on both our serpent 966.

The track itself didn’t give us too many problems since we had raced here before and with the new Artec body I was able to improve my lap times by 0.2 sec.

On Saturday we were only able to run two of the five qualifiers due to rain, but I managed to finished in 8th position., which meant that I was front running Serpent driver. J

On Sunday morning the racing action finally started and the weather gods had some mercy with us, since it only rained very slightly during the half finals, otherwise the track stayed dry for the day.
My half final was saw a very strong field with current champion Hanauer right in front of me on pole and Toni Gruber and Michael Salven  on my heels.
I was able to hold second place until Stefan made a mistake and allowed me to take the lead with Toni right behind me. Michael had some technical problems and Andreas Giesa hit the wall going into the straight, which allowed Armin Baier to get the last bump up position for the final.

From the other half final Andreas Hammerl, Karl-Heinz Meister and Lennart Skornia bumped up.
We had 40 minutes to prepare our cars for the final while Class 2 dodged it out on the track..

Now it was time for the big one, 40 minutes to find our new champion.
My start was very good and I was able to gain two positions right away and stayed in 5th place until the first fuel stop.
After 15 minutes I was in second behind Robin, who was leading after Robert Pietsch had spent close to a minute in the pits with engine problems.

All of a sudden one of my front tires came off and I fell back to fourth. I put my head down and got back into third, closing in on Toni who was running second at that time. Meanwhile it started to drizzle slightly and we tried to push my tire stop back as much as possible to not loose too much time if we had to go to rain tires.
15 minute before the end of the race my glow plug called it a day and after we had changed it, my engine completely lost tune and went from four stroking to lean in the dame lap. This cost me loads of time and I fell back to seventh place by the end of the race.
Robert was able to launch a furios recovery run that brought him back into second place behind Robin D’Hondt., who is now German Champion in 8th scale. Young gun Toni Gruber showed again what he’s capable of and finished in third place. Way to go!

It was a great race and a wonderful event by AMC Hildesheim, who did everything to make it an enjoyable event.
Their connection to the weather gods needs some improvement though J

Many thanks to my sponsors Serpent, Max Power, MLC-fuel,  LMI-Racing and IDM tires and special thanks to my dad, without whom I wouldn’t have made this final.
Cheers also to Jirka Hassler who helped us in the pits during the final.

Next race will be Gubbio, racing the new Serpent 733.

Take care,
Ciao ciao

last minute addition:

During the Tombola after the ceremony, the sisters of Sabrina won the fabulous Serpent 1/24 scale electric pan car the Serpent S240.

The ladies build it right away at the track and finished assembly in few hours time, well done.... seems an experienced racing family ...
