Multiple retired racing driver Julius Kolff is set to participate at the first round of the South African Nationals. The race will be held at the Thunder Valley Raceway track close to Johannesburg.
“My work as a KLM pilot takes me to many places around the world and for a while I’ve been looking to combine RC with work. Johannesburg was added about 6 months ago to the 777 network and after some e-mails with Dave Wiseman, the Serpent distributor in SA, I decided to compete in the 6/7 March race.”
Last January two test days were set up at the TVR track. “I’ll miss the free practice in the event weekend, so I wanted to try and test beforehand. Getting used to the high altitude engine setup, and getting a good balance in the car was the goal for the test”. Arnie Vermaak did a terrific job in getting the track sorted and sugared for the 2 test days. Even with the rain which unfortunately shortened testing on the 2nd day, a very promising preliminary setup was found.
“The 733 proved fast and reliable. I tested quite some different options, going from front diff to one-way and solid axle, and a few different shock settings. All options had their pro’s and con’s and I guess it is a matter of personal preference that I ended up with the front diff.”
“Thanks to Dave and Arnie I feel well prepared and am really looking forward to the race. Let’s hope the nice SA summer weather returns and we’ll have a great event. Having experienced the hospitality in January I hope to return the favor by providing support to the local drivers whenever they need it.”
