The european championship started very bad for all. We had the whole Monday rain. Only one hour at the end of the day the track was dry and most of the drivers has done here first laps with almost 15 cars on the track. I drove only 10 formation laps that everything works well for the next practice day. Tuesday was complete dry and we could drive arround 8 times with 8 minutes time. The setup must be changed a little bit compared to the Efra GP because the front tires were a bit harder compared to this race. From the efra GP we knew where our problems were so we focused on the tire wear. So after free practise i was on first position arround 0,4 seconds faster on three laps. On Thursday we had again an almost full day of rain, fortunately the track was dry at the end of the day and controlled practise could be done. Again first position with a nice gap. Finally we realized that we had still to much tire wear and some drivers could make easy the 5 minutes, which was also super close for me.
So on Friday the qualification started again by wonderfull weather. It was possible for me to win the first 3 rounds to secure the overall TQ. In the last 2 qualifications I tested some small things and could improve the car again a little bit to the changed grip conditions now. I was also able to win the last two rounds of qualification to make it 5 out of 5. I was very happy now with the car and the engine. Everything was nearly perfect.
On Saturday the finals day I had the last practise in front of the semi finals. The car felt not so good and a bit unbalanced left and right. We checked again the tire wear and the fuel consumption. So finally we decided to make the same strategy as at the Efra GP.
Stop every 4.30 and change one time the outide tires after 13.30 and one time all tires after 31.30. The problem was that i couldn´t drive 18 minutes on the outside front tire, so i had to safe the left front tire in the middle part of the race. On the first set the plan was to push maximum until 13.30, to create hopefully a gap. Because i thought, that some guys could make 5 minutes stops with only one complete tire change at the middle of the race.
The final started perfect for me and i pulled away very fast. I guess i had a bad rear tire in the last practise before the final, because the car was on point again and i drove also the fastest lap of the whole week in the first 10 minutes of the final. We had a small problem at the first refuelling with the cable tie from the fuel tank, but Thomas fixed it safe. So after my first outside tire change i was still in the lead and focused on me front left tire the next 18 minutes. Thomas sayed me everything is perfect because i was still faster then the other guys. After 31.30 minutes we changed all tires and we had two fantastic tire stops with Thomas Günsel and Tobias Kerler. In the last part of the race i drove very carefully and could manage the win with a two laps gap.
It was a very emotional victory for me, because i had so much bad luck in the past at european championships, and finally my first european title was on my local track. My family, friends and my girlfriend were there and watched the race and the sport that I love, so yeah it was a very special moment.
I want to thank all my sponsors and people which support me all the time. Without you this success were not possible over the last years as a not full time professional driver.
So now the focus will be again on the 989 and the last ENS and the last race for me this year in Fontana for the 1/8 world championship.
See u on the track
