The SERPENT 705 is the latest version of the class defining Impulse PRO. Incorporating many of the new features that were developed for the winning cars at the 2002 ROAR On Road Nationals. With the '705' Team Serpent will stay ahead of its challengers in the highly competitive 200mm Sedan class.
Refinement is the key word when describing the Serpent 705. Heavily based on the ROAR National winning Impulse Pro, the car has been further enhanced with changes to the lower center of gravity, chassis stiffness and the cars overall weight.
Lowering weight and reducing polar moment are two main features of the Serpent 705. A new carbon fiber radio plate features a new layout to aid this. With the battery pack mounted in the newly designed chassis plate and sitting just in front of the engine, the polar moment has also been reduced. Combine this with a fully adjustable ball differential in addition to the carbon fiber shock towers and you have a very tunable 200mm car. The cars geometry is taken from the Impulse Pro as it has already proved to work. With a new top mounted rear anti-roll bar and an adjustable front anti-roll bar thrown in and you have a car to beat.
The newly designed radio plate, constructed from 2mm woven carbon fiber, features a new layout while at the same time increases the stiffness of the entire chassis. The steering servo is mounted in a conventional upside down manner whilst the throttle servo is set at an angle in order to reach both the carburetor and brake system on this ultra compact radio plate. The radio plate also sports a carbon fiber receiver mount placed beside the optional transponder holder’s mounting point.
The Serpent 705 features two carbon fiber CNC machined shock towers mounted to the front and rear. Providing optional shock mounting positions, these towers are a crucial tuning element to help you find the perfect setup for every track condition.
The radio plate support bracket has been beautifully machined from a single block of aluminum and whilst supporting the radio plate also increases overall chassis stiffness. The support bracket also provides the mounting points for both the rollover bar and the chassis stiffeners.
A completely new 75cc fuel tank has been developed to allow for the new mounting of the battery pack, which is placed directly beneath the tank. Top mounted using rubber covered aluminium mountings to isolate from vibrations; it is held in place by small body clips. This new tank is fitted with another of Serpents innovations, the ‘AFL’ fuel tank lid. It contains an air chamber to prevent the backpressure tubing being blocked by fuel being forced back down it at high speed cornering. Also new is the lightweight pick up filter, now made from a special polypropylene.
The battery pack for the Serpent 705 is mounted into an easy to remove composite battery holder and placed in the chassis plate directly under the fuel tank. This gives the 705 the lowest possible center of gravity and lowest polar moment due to the weight being in the direct center of the car. The battery holder is designed to hold 5 Triple-A 1.2v cells, (not included). A pre-made battery pack is available as an option.
The newly designed chassis plate has been constructed from 3mm T6 aerospace quality aluminum to provide both strength and stiffness while at the same time its optimal design ensure that it is kept lightweight. The chassis plate comes with three cooling holes just under the engine to aid temperature control. It houses the battery pack, which is mounted into the plate and held in place by composite mounting points. All screw holes are countersunk to ensure no obstructions when the chassis is running low to the ground.
Another unique feature, the 2 carbon fiber side mounted chassis stiffeners. These plates form a strong bridge between the front and rear section of the 705, and are mounted directly to the radio plate bracket and to the rear-bearing blocks. They increase the chassis’ stiffness, an essential condition to make effective use of the sophisticated suspension adjustment options. The left chassis stiffener also houses the adjustable ball-raced belt tensioner, a simple and very effective system.
The new 2-speed gearbox is an evolution of the first 2-speed system Serpent invented many years ago. Now in a lighter and much more efficient form, this gearbox is easy to adjust and assemble thanks to its simple design. The gearbox features larger ball bearings (a 6x10mm and a 6x13mm) for extra durability and smoother rotation. The gears are mounted to the carriers with three small screws and come in different colors for easy recognition in your toolbox. A full range of gears is available in combination with pinions for the Centax-II™ clutch.
Only the second design of the clutch system created by Serpent in the early nineties, the Centax-II™ features larger ball bearings (a 5x13mm and a 5x10mm) as well as a larger thrust bearing (5x10mm). This increases durability and provides ultra free movement of parts. Featuring an externally adjustable clutch spacing method, the new Centax™ system also sports a new stiffer spring (1.8mm) and a completely new pivoting flyweight system. Standard is the new XP clutch shoe which, when used in combination with all the other new parts, provides extra punch and better clutch consistency.
The Serpent 705 sports 7mm aluminum spacers mounted above the rear composite upright. This allows for a higher roll center and therefore better grip and a more stable car.
Now as standard the Serpent 705 features a graphite rear body mount with adjustable body post mounting points to ensure the optimum body mounting is achieved.
Serpent’s famous 4-step externally adjustable shock absorbers now come with keyed shock pistons, which gives the shock a very positive clicks when selecting another setting. The Serpent 705 comes supplied with yellow springs and Serpents ultra consistent 30W quality shock oil.
The Serpent 705’s steering blocks are constructed from a very strong composite material and sport ridges for increased strength and rigidity.
Using a spring type mounting wire to isolate vibrations, the spring is attached to the car to the front bearing block and secured in place with a grub screw.
The brake system consists of 2 steel plates merged with braking material ensuring efficient stopping power to the single disc. The braking action utilizes a cam system (the brake cam is hard anodized), which further ensures the smoothest braking action.
The front bumper of the Serpent 705 is constructed from high impact resistant foam and is held in place with a composite bumper bracket.
As with all cars in the Serpent range the Serpent 705 features independent double wishbone suspension.
Supplied with purple sealed high quality lightweight bearings throughout, the drive train is very efficient and runs very smoothly.
The front axle is made from high-grade aluminum and contains the best quality one-way bearings lubricated with Serpent one-way lube. This ensures a consistent drive to the front high quality coated spring steel drive cups.
Made from high quality heat-treated steel, the front and rear wheel axles are very durable and ultra strong. These are a precision fit for the main bearings and when mounted are combined with purple anodized hex drive wheel adaptors front and rear to remove all play and ensure consistent drive to the wheels.
The Serpent 705 is supplied with a fully adjustable ball differential. Using high-grade stainless steel diff balls provides the smoothest action possible and due to it being fully adjustable further ensures that the optimum settings can be achieved and maintained for any track condition.
By changing several pulleys the Serpent 705 has achieved better acceleration and improved engine pickup, which enables an even faster exit out of corners.
Made from HUDY™ spring steel these polished 8.5mm pivot balls are virtually unbreakable and ensure the smoothest suspension movement possible.
Serpent use only the highest quality drive train in their cars and this car is no exception. It comes supplied with high quality hardened steel drive shafts capable of withstanding constant punishment; these shafts are ultra durable and very stiff allowing you to put all your power to the tarmac.
Now sporting larger purple anodized aluminum engine blocks ensures that the engine is held in place solidly and is more resistant to chassis twisting.
Serpent uses Kevlar reinforced drive belts. The Serpent 705 uses three main belts, driven by a series of composite pulleys mounted on aluminum pulley adapters. This makes for a very smooth, efficient and durable drive system.
The Serpent 705 comes supplied with an adjustable front anti-roll bar and top mounted 1.5 mm rear anti-roll bar.
The Serpent 705 comes complete with a full set of the finest quality 35° shore Ellegi Technics™ foam trued and glued on Serpents six-spoke yellow wheels (30mm rear, 26mm front).
