If the spacer is not free, you should cut the flat inside edges of the upright away. This is due to the shock mounting grubscrew pushing plastic in the way of the spacer. This is visible on a used upright but on a new upright the grubscrew should be put in place so the plastic can be cut away before continuing. This could be done with a sharp knife or dremel tool.
